GKIDS announces the release dates for the home videos of Mamoru Hosoda’s latest critically acclaimed animated film, Belle.

The anime distributor has announced that Beautiful, the latest film from acclaimed director Mamoru Hosoda, will be released on digital platforms on May 3. The film will be released physically in a Blu-ray and DVD combo pack on May 17. A special edition package, which will include Blu-ray and DVD copies of the film in a steelbook case, will be released the same day and will be sold exclusively at Target stores. The home video releases will feature a number of extras, including an interview with Hosoda, scene breakdowns and a behind-the-scenes video that digs deeper into the production of the film’s acclaimed soundtrack. The Blu-ray release will include a number of exclusive extras, including a new featurette creation, design gallery, and video of voice actor Kylie McNeill, the English voice actor of protagonist Suzu, performing the theme from the movie, “Gales of Song.”
Beautiful tells the story of Suzu Naito, a teenage girl who lost her mother at a young age and now struggles to express herself in front of others. Suzu’s shyness keeps her from performing in reality, but in U’s virtual social network, Suzu adopts the persona of Belle, a popular diva with a multi-billion global following. However, Belle’s singing career takes a turn after she meets the Beast, a violent user with a monstrous avatar, who is tracked by the social network’s security guards.
Beautiful was a huge hit in Japan, where it grossed 6.5 billion yen (about US$57 million). The animated film was the fourth-highest-grossing film of the year, finishing behind three films from established franchises: the hit prequel Jujutsu Kaisen 0Hideaki Anno’s animated finale Evangelion 3.0 + 1.01: Once Upon a Time and Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet, who respectively took first, second and third place. GKIDS gave the film a limited theatrical release in the United States, where it earned an additional $3 million in its first two weeks and became Hosoda’s biggest box office success in the region.
The film was also well received by critics: after receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews in Japan, the film made its international debut at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival, where it received a 14-minute standing ovation from the audience at the event. Hosoda’s latest work received a fresh rating from review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with a 95% approval rating from professional critics and audiences alike.
