Bethlehem Academy volleyball receives fourth seed


Section 1A champion Faribault Bethlehem Academy Cardinals is the No. 4 seed in the MSHSL State Volleyball Tournament which begins Wednesday, November 10, 2021 in St. Paul.

The Cardinals will play Thursday, November 11, 2021 at 5:00 p.m. against No.5 seed Breckenridge Cowgirls.

Seeded Mayer Lutheran simultaneously plays South Ridge at the Xcel Energy Center.

Across the Class A, No.2 seed, Minneota will play at 7 p.m. Thursday against Badger / Greenbush-Middle River while Legacy Christian Academy is the No.3 seed and take on Walker-Hackensack-Akeley. .

Mayer Lutheran (29-2) has been ranked No. 1 in Class A all season after defeating Minneota in the first game of the year at Hopkins in a five-set thriller. They also won 2-1 over the Vikings in a tournament. The Crusaders are 78-7 in sets.

Mayer Lutheran’s losses came against Class 2A Southwest Christian 3-2 at Southwest Christian and against Class 4A Chaska at the Chaska 2-1 tournament.

The South Ridge Panthers (21-6) are based in Culver, Minnesota, in the St. Louis County Public School District. The Panthers are 65-25 in sets.

Bethlehem Academy (20-11) opened the season with losses to Stewartville (ranked No.1 at the time in Class AA), Eden Prairie (in the Class 4A State Tournament) on the road ahead of s losing to Mayer Lutheran in 3 sets at home.

The Cardinals have been in tough tournaments against bigger schools where they have competed. They went undefeated in the Gopher Conference and lost just one set in the section’s playoffs to Rushford Peterson.

Bethlehem Academy is 60-31 in sets.

Breckendridge (29-2) is probably digging his head a bit to be the No.5 seed and play a team with double-digit losses as the No.4 seed, but it really doesn’t make a difference if you’re # 4 or # 5 because there’s no edge on the court or whatever.

The Cowgirls had to survive two straight set wins in the Section 6A playoffs, so they’re definitely put to the test.

The other side of the support Minneota (29-4) is at 79-14 in sets. The Vikings haven’t lost a set in their run to the sectional playoffs at State.

Badger / Greenbush-Middle River (29-3) is 77-21 in sets. The Gators lost to the Vikings in the Class A volleyball demonstration tournament in Burnsville in late September. They had to survive a five-set match against Kittson County Central to win Section 8A and qualify for State.

Legacy Christian Academy (24-6) lost to Kenyon-Wanamingo in straight sets at the start of the season. The Lions are 56-17 in sets and picked up victories over BA, Badger / Greenbush-Middle RIver in the Class A volleyball showcase where they also lost to Minneota.

Walker-Hackensack-Akeley (28-5) is 75-6 in sets, meaning Wolves haven’t lost out of tournaments this season. They went undefeated in Section 5 and lost to Bethlehem Academy at the Showcast Volleyball tournament in Burnsville.

If BA wins, they will play at 1:00 p.m. Friday at the Xcel Energy Center against match winner Mayer Lutheran. If the Cardinals lose their opener, they will also play at 1:00 p.m. Friday at Xcel.

The consolation final will take place on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. The match for the state title or for the third place is scheduled for Saturday at 1:00 p.m. All at the Xcel Energy Center.

Saturday afternoon matches would be broadcast on KAT KOUNTRY 105 104.9 FM and KAT KOUNTRY 105 app.

All other games of the week will be broadcast on KDHL, 920 AM, 97.9 FM, KDHL app. If the Cardinals play Saturday morning, it would be on POWER 96 Radio, 95.9 FM.
