Boondocks 3 confirmed with cast and original director

The Saints of Boondock are reverting to their righteous vigilante ways. Deadline reports that director Troy Duffy is once again teaming up with actors Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery for a third film that follows the Irish twin brothers on a mission to kill criminals and evildoers.

The script is written by series creator Duffy, along with Flanery, and with input from Reedus. Filming will begin next May, when Flanery completes work on Amazon’s The Boys and when Reedus finishes work on The last season of The Walking Dead. The production of Boondock Saints 3 will be Shaun Redick (Get Out, Black KkKlansman) and Yvette Yates Redick.

Duffy said the sequel will shift the focus from Boston Mafia villains to corrupt politicians.

“Where we’re going, the brothers are older,” Duffy said. “They arrive in a whole new world that is not like the one they left. They disagree. One wants to continue, the other does not. There is a new enemy out there, not like the traditional ones they have faced. That’s the timely thing about this one.

The original Boondock Saints films were a notorious box office failure, in part due to unfortunate timing alongside the Columbine High School shooting, which left 12 students and a teacher dead. With gun violence new to Americans’ minds, a particularly violent and armed film like Boondock Saints failed to gain traction with media executives.

Although it failed spectacularly at the box office and earned 28% on Rotten Tomatoes, its subsequent DVD release saw it soar to cult classic status. Deadline reports that the hope with Boondock Saints 3 is to build a massive John Wick-style film franchise.
