“Family Guy” is an adult animated series created by Seth MacFarlane that revolves around awkward, underachieving blue collar Peter Griffin, and his family comprising his wife, Lois, their children, Meg, Chris and Stewie, and dog company, Brian. The series first premiered in 1999 and, after initial audience struggles, gained popularity, becoming one of the most enduring names in pop culture.
The critically acclaimed series has 8 Emmy Awards to its name and is widely hailed for its satirical approach to American culture. Although the series airs on FOX, Adult Swim has been the scene of reruns of over 360 episodes of the series since 2003. However, after gaining cult status and dedicated fan following on the Cartoon Network block , “Family Guy” looks set to leave Adult Swim, and here’s everything you need to know about it!
Family Guy Leaving Adult Swimming?
“Family Guy” first premiered January 31, 1999 on Fox. After the second season, the series was initially canceled, but the renewal was announced at the last minute. However, due to poor ratings for the third season, the series found itself on the chopping block again.
Cartoon Network has purchased the rights to air the show’s reruns on its late-night, adult-oriented programming block, Adult Swim. The show premiered on Adult Swim on April 20, 2003 and quickly became one of the channel’s most-watched shows.
Around the same time, the series was also released in DVD format and sold almost 400,000 copies in the first month alone. Through impressive DVD sales and continued presence on Adult Swim, “Family Guy” has developed legions of fans and garnered a cult following. So FOX was prompted to relaunch the series, and as they say, the rest is history.
Adult Swim held the streaming rights for the show until September 19, 2021. However, following Disney’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox and all of its properties, FX Networks also began broadcasting reruns of the show. As of September 20, 2021, the first 19 seasons of the series have migrated to FXX while FX and Freeform also air some episodes. Adult Swim shared a heartwarming promotion announcing the show’s departure, which you can check out below.
