Friends of the Fort Myers Beach Library will be hosting a giant book sale at the Fort Myers Beach Public Library parking lot on Saturday and Sunday, February 26-27.

The book sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both days. The giant book sale is the first since last November. All funds go to Friends of the Library, which donates to the library for items it needs. The Friends of Fort Myers Beach Library recently donated $20,000 to the library.

People will be able to bring a bag of groceries to fill as many books as they can for $15 or buy a bag from the book sale for $15 to fill.

Otherwise, individual books will be priced at $2 for a hardcover issue and $1 for a softcover book.

Along with thousands of books for sale, there will be CDs, DVDs and puzzles available for $2 each.

“Last time we had 130 boxes,” Liz Rhodes, director of circulation at the Fort Myers Beach Public Library. “The last book sale was one of the most successful. We had a lot of donations. »

Rhodes said the donations were “more than usual. It’s good that a lot of people donated.

Rhodes said the library was “very busy” lately with great attendance for the presenters. The library recently signed up for new magazine and newspaper subscriptions.

In addition to donations from the public for the sale of books, the library removes from its shelves books that do not circulate enough. “We had a major weeding out of our non-fiction department,” Rhodes said. The library runs reports to see which books are being used the least to decide which ones to put up for sale. The library receives about 5,000 new books each year, Rhodes said.

“Some of them are brand new”, she says.

The Fort Myers Beach Community Foundation will have a table with their merchandise for sale. The Fort Myers Beach Woman’s Club will be selling tickets to its St. Patrick’s Day party, which will take place after the parade at its clubhouse on March 17. There will also be 50/50 raffle tickets for the party.

The Fort Myers Beach Marine Resources Task Force is also expected to be on hand with an information booth for children and adults.

Jan Fleming, who sits on the Friends of the Library board, said “we can always use volunteers.”

Fleming said the days and times when volunteers are most needed are Thursdays at 9:30 a.m., when tables are set up and books are moved to the garage. “It will take a few strong arms”, said Fleming.

Another time when help is needed is Friday at 9:30 a.m. when the books are unpacked. Volunteers are also needed during the show from 8:45 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both days.

Help is also needed on Sunday around 1:45 p.m. when the sale ends to pack the books and transport them to storage, Fleming said.
