HBO Max won’t stream Venom 2, sorry (and neither will Disney Plus)

Currently, HBO Max is releasing new Warner Bros. movies. the very day of their theatrical release.

HBO Max has become synonymous with streaming new cinema films, thanks to an unprecedented number of films released on the service at no additional cost on the day they hit U.S. theaters. But the biggest new movie of this weekend – Venom: let there be carnage, the wonder– the linked sequel – will not be available there. It will also not be shown on Disney plus, although Disney possesses wonder. (Yes, it’s complicated. Read the next section below.)

But the other big outing this weekend – The Many Saints of Newark, a movie prequel to the gangster series The Sopranos – will be available to stream on HBO Max early Friday morning. it will join crying macho, the latest film from director Clint Eastwood, and Smart, the most recent horror film from the creator of the franchise The Conjuring, while current theatrical releases to stream on Max.

This is because the only films HBO Max the streams while still in theaters are Warner Bros. movies. The Many Saints of Newark, crying macho and Smart, all Warner Bros. movies, can be streamed on HBO Max. Venom 2 is distributed by another company.

HBO Max made waves last year when he announced that he would broadcast new films released in theaters Warner Bros. Studios at no additional cost on the same day, they were released on the big screen in 2021. This included Godzilla vs. Kong, In the heights and Space Jam: a new legacy earlier this year, as well as future releases Dune and The matrix 4.

But that also means that any other studio’s movies won’t be on Max on the same day.

The strategy created some mistaken hope among moviegoers when all a new film is released in theaters. Without knowing the studio that is distributing this new movie, a lot of people are curious that maybe this is one of the movies available on HBO Max too much.

The films of Warner Bros. have a direct pipeline to Max because HBO Max and Warner Bros. are both owned and operated by AT&T. WarnerMedia. They are basically brothers and sisters.

But it’s worth noting that this hybrid strategy is unique to Warner Bros. and HBO. No other Hollywood studio is so aggressive in immediately putting so many movies (including mega-budget ones) on a streaming service at no additional cost.

The hybrid release strategy is so aggressive, in fact, that WarnerMedia ends it after 2021. Starting in 2022, the Warner Bros. will have a 45-day window exclusively in theaters before hitting HBO Max. However, this theatrical window will be much shorter than it was before the pandemic.

Will Venom: There Will Be Carnage be available to stream this weekend?

No. Venom: there will be carnage is distributed by Sony Pictures, which releases it exclusively in theaters on Friday. That means it won’t be on HBO Max, or Disney Plus or any other streaming service, for that matter.

Venom 2 also won’t end up airing on Max or Disney Plus in the near future. Venom is part of the Spider-Man universe, which all derives from Marvel, but Disney’s Marvel and Sony have a complicated license-sharing agreement for Spider-Man characters. Basically, Sony is responsible for creating and distributing standalone films about the Spider-Man universe, and then Disney’s Marvel can “borrow” the characters for films in its own Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is why Tom Holland’s Spider-Man appears in the Avengers movies.

Thanks to another complicated licensing deal, Sony has struck a deal to have its 2021 films first air on Starz, where they can be watched on its traditional channels or streamed on its app. Starz will therefore be the first place where you can stream Venom 2, which should be available there sometime in 2022.

Is Dear Evan Hansen Streaming?

Nope. Dear Evan Hansen, distributed by Universal, is only available in theaters.

But HBO has what’s called a one-time license agreement with Universal, which means HBO is the first place Universal’s movies are shown on TV or streaming services. These movies won’t reach HBO and HBO Max until they become available in three other ways: first in theaters, then online rental, and finally on Blu-ray and DVD for sale. Typically, these paid movies tend to be streamed around nine months after theatrical release, but no date for Cher Evan Hansen has been announced yet.

Either way, that means HBO Max is on track to release it first before any other service, next year.

What about the other movies now? Is Shang-Chi streaming? Free guy? Dear Evan Hansen? Candyman?

None of these are on Max, but there are ways to stream some of them.

wonder‘s Shang-Chi and the legend of the ten rings will not be available to stream until November 12, when it will be available on Disney Plus at no additional cost compared to a regular subscription.

But Free Guy doesn’t broadcast at all. It is distributed by 20th Century Studios, which is part of Disney, and Disney gives free guy 45 days in theaters exclusively from August 13, so it won’t be available to stream anywhere while it’s in theaters.

However, the first place you can stream Free Guy will likely be HBO Max, but not for months. Movie licensing is complicated, and HBO locked the rights years ago to be the premier place to stream 20th century movies. HBO Max will be the first streaming service to get Free Guy, due to the pre-existing licensing agreement, even though Disney owns the Disney Plus and Hulu streaming services, and either or both may stream Free Guy even later. than HBO.

But HBO Max isn’t expected to start streaming Free Guy until about six to nine months after its theatrical release. That means it won’t be available to air there until next year.

Dear Evan Hansen and Candy are both distributed by Universal, and they were initially only released in theaters. Candyman is however available for digital rental now.

But HBO is the first place Universal’s movies air on TV or a streaming service, so those two movies will end up airing first on HBO Max. HBO has what’s called a one-time license agreement with Universal, but these movies won’t reach HBO and HBO Max until they become available in three other ways: first as a release. in theaters, then as an online rental and finally on Blu-ray and DVD for sale. Typically, these paid movies tend to be streamed around nine months after theatrical release, but no date for Cher Evan Hansen or Candyman has yet been announced.

Either way, that means HBO Max is on track to release it first before any other service next year.

What other new movies can I stream on HBO Max while they’re in theaters?

All of these titles will be available on HBO Max the same day they hit theaters in the United States.

Typically, most new Warner Bros. movies are available to stream on Max at 12:01 am PT / 3:01 am ET on the day of release. But the arrival time for other films may vary, depending on when the first film screenings take place in theaters. Wonder Woman 1984, for example, became available at 9:00 a.m. PT / 12:00 p.m. ET on December 25 because those were the first theaters to open that day. The Suicide Squad was in the same boat, arriving on duty at an unusual time.

All Warner Bros. Movies released in this “hybrid” model on HBO Max will be available in 4K Ultra HD resolution and HDR image quality, although those formats are not yet standard for the full Max library.

Several movies have come and gone, including Mortal Kombat and Godzilla vs. Kong. But all those Warner Bros. movies will return to HBO Max for airing a few months after release. Wonder Woman 1984, for example, is back on HBO Max to stream, having left the service in January when it hit theaters.

But 2021 is set to be the only year for this phenomenon of streaming new movies to the big screen on HBO Max as soon as they hit theaters due to the coronavirus pandemic. Warner Bros. has stated that 10 films produced by the studio will go straight to HBO Max in 2022, but major franchise films will have 45 days in theaters exclusively with no streaming options during that time starting next year.
