That’s the question Nicky asks after seeing footage of her shifu fight during Wednesday’s Season 3 premiere. Even though he look at like Pei-Ling, Nicky noted that she used some of Shao’s moves, suggesting there was much more to the story.
“The mystery of how much of this is Pei-Ling and how much of that is Shao is the central mystery of the first half of the season,” co-showrunner Robert Berens told TVLine. “It’s very busy for Nikki because all she wants is her shifu return, but there may be dark consequences or dark forces behind Pei-Ling’s return.”
According to series creator and co-host Christina M. Kim, Pei-Ling’s return also throws Nicky off her game. “A lot of Nicky’s journey as a person started with her relationship with her shifu in China,” says Kim. Witnessing Pei-Ling’s murder at the hands of Zhilan was a huge motivator in the first two seasons, so this unexpected second chance with his shifu is going to have a “really big impact on his character in a good way, but also in a way that may not be”. be good and could affect his judgment in the future. It’s going to be really interesting, very complicated, but [also] juicy and curvy because it’s such an unusual story.
The episode also caught up with us with Henry, who traveled far and wide in search of answers about his father’s past. He even gambled with the ring he got for Nicky, but then later stole it. It was a hint to fans that despite Henry’s radio silence and continuing this quest without Nicky, he “still sees [her] like the one for him,” Berens notes. “He has yet to complete his personal journey and get answers about his past and his father, so we will tell that story in the first episodes of the season.” But don’t worry, Henry and Nicky will eventually “collide”.
In the meantime, he has things to understand about himself. “Henry comes out matured and evolved as a person,” adds Berens. However, it will be a challenge to return “when everyone is gone”. Fans can expect “a very exciting dynamic to perform with Henry and the entire cast in due course.”
As for Nicky, things are going to be very complicated given the return of Pei-Ling and the arrival of a new one named Bo (played by Legacy‘Ben Levin). Season 3 is “all about what she wants – her desire for a second chance with a woman who means so much to her; his own desires for maybe a different type of relationship now that there’s this new guy,” Berens teases.
“The focus is getting closer and closer to Nicky as a character and what she wants under the armor she has to put on. It will take us to some really dark, complex, juicy and dramatic places with the character. of Nicky,” he adds.
