Latest donation from local charity sees new garden unveiled at RUH

The garden of the Children’s Ward at the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust has undergone a complete overhaul, creating an improved outdoor space to play and relax for some of the hospital’s youngest patients. The transformation is entirely due to the local charity Time is Precious, which has raised £ 33,000 to pay for the improvements.

The new-look garden contains a basketball net, soccer goal, playhouse, play boards, slides, porters, and even a wooden bus. There is also a relaxation hut, benches and picnic tables for patients and their families who wish to rest or have a snack.

RUH CEO Cara Charles-Barks said: “I am very grateful to Time is Precious for their incredible generosity. Thanks to them, we were able to completely transform the outdoor garden of our children’s room.

“It is so important that our young patients have the opportunity to spend time playing outside in the great outdoors if they can. This can help improve their recovery and give them a break from serving. These are truly fantastic improvements that are going to make such a difference for some of our younger patients. “

The Time is Precious charity was founded in 2011 by the Coleford couple, Neil and Nicky Halford in memory of their son Ben, who died of cancer at the age of just five. Ben was treated at the RUH, as well as at the Bristol Children’s Hospital and the old Frenchay Hospital.

The aim of the association is to help create a more comfortable and relaxed atmosphere for children and their families in the hospital and at home. To date, he has donated over £ 200,000 to RUH in the form of equipment and refurbishment projects.

More recently, the charity paid for a specialized DVD player that was installed in one of the radiology department’s MRI rooms, allowing patients to watch their favorite movie while they take their exam.

Neil Halford said: “It has been a privilege to complete the renovation of the garden, we have tried to include something for everyone. Time Is Precious has already started on our next projects at RUH.

“The RUH was like a second home for Ben and our goal is to make it easier for the children and their families to stay in the hospital. “
