New types of hard drives and recommendations?

Hello,

I need a little advice on new types of storage? The emphasis is on the internal, but also interested in certain external volumes.

I know there are a lot of weirdly shaped funny little internal discs etc. I don’t know anything about. I don’t know what each type / genre / type of device is for?

eg – “WD Black SN750 500GB SSD NVMe PCIe M.2 Internal Drive Gaming WDS500G3X0C” (BTW, how does this help gaming? Will it help music production or general PC usage as well ?

My specs are below for reference ok!

What other types of hard drives (internal / external) should I use?

What can I use with my PC as is and what adapters and accessories would I need to buy to use some of these new things (and how many are they) eg NVMe PCIe M.2 thing – will I get need to upgrade my PCIe stuff ?? And what about things like eSata and all that? What’s up there?

Outside of Umart, what are the best / reliable places to buy this brick mortar / online stuff? You have always been hesitant to buy anything for a PC that is not in a store … is it much riskier to have the hard drives and things delivered – will it be damaged during the transport?

I am absolutely unaware of this stuff, I bought my last PC at least 5-10 years ago now. I currently have a Samsung 120GB SSD as a system drive for Win 8 – but I AM PLANNING AN UPGRADE to Win 10 very soon – important to note that is okay.

Also have, 4TB WD Mybook and a slew of old WD Blacks.

In the past, I’ve always preferred WD for internal and external drives, so that’s my preference – but I’m open to new ideas if better.

NOTE – I plan to do a lot of multitrack music recording / mixing / production in something like Ableton Live / Logic / Cubase / Pro Tools / Adobe Auditions etc. Live MIDI and audio recording.

I think should I get a separate scratch disc for this one piece of music (and maybe a bit of Photoshop or video editing as well, but definitely the music)? SSD or just internal WD Black ok or small novelties?

Can a Scratch Disk help in general with PCs now? eg my mammoth browser load? or is it just RAM?

I might want to replay high end games, but it’s not a priority – just maybe. So not interested in upgrading video cards / RAM etc. for the moment. Also, plan to watch a lot of 4K content streaming and from files on PC, and cast to my TV with Chromecast. That and intensive navigation (millions of tabs / windows).

I’m not rich – but I want to get the amount of storage and type rich to the point where you get the best bang for your buck for the least amount of money. Which reminds me – can you comment on which types of storage are the most profitable for which type of tasks? or just compared to each other?

So which system drive should I get for Windows 10 – Our 120GB Samsung SSD was nowhere near enough. I would like a larger and more realistic minimum size and recommended size so that you don’t have any issues when it fills up with updates etc. Should it be an SSD or one of these new ones?

I don’t remember the limitations on the number and types of drives that I can install in my MOBO? But my main storage should be internal – just the usual WD Blacks (what are 3.5?) Or something else – type diff?

And can someone give me the short version of a summary of the new WD colors? Always stay in the dark or not? I don’t use any server etc. Just a normal PC.

I want to back up a lot of my stuff, if not all of it – again – what are the cheapest / most reliable types to use for this? Internal or Ext? or DVDS or new types of DVDS? or the new little training things, etc.? So out of the loop!

You probably want 4GB drives if it’s economical – maybe 2 to 5 times that overall amount – excluding the system drive and the Scratch drive. No definite numbers. Are you just looking for the highlights when it comes to driving sizes for good value?

If you can point me to some great guides for specific types of things to look for, that would be a killer.

Any ideas or advice would be great, thank you for your help.

These are the basic specs of my system below:

Gigabyte Z77X-D3H, Intel i7-3770 @ 3.40 GHz, 3.90 GHz processor

16 GB DDR3 RAM

64 bit Win 8.1 Pro

But will upgrade to Win 10 Pro

Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 OC with Boost 3 GB DDR5

Thank you
