Steve Asbell, president of 20th Century Studios, said there are multiple films planned for Ryan Reynolds’ action-comedy film Free Guy.
There may be more than one sequel in Ryan Reynolds’ cards free guy.
“It happens like the other divisions, two or three movies in theaters a year,” 20th Century Studios president Steve Asbell told The Hollywood Reporter. “We navigate the market like everyone else. There are films like Avatar, Planet of the Apes and now free guy which have a well-established theatrical precedence for a wide audience. “In particular, Asbell noted, ‘We have more Avatar upcoming movies we have more free guy upcoming movies. We’re going to be pretty busy.”
According to Asbell, the studio will “evaluate these decisions on a film-by-film basis” based on the market. “We have major original movies in development that we haven’t announced yet, and that’ll be all right for that number of movies a year,” he continued. “The great thing about all of this is that we have both. We have this explosive new streaming mandate to pursue, but we also have titles that we can create [for theatrical].”
Asbell did not specify how much free guy movies — whether sequels, spinoffs, or both — the studio has planned. However, shortly after the film’s theatrical release on August 13, 2021, Reynolds confirmed that Disney had officially requested at least one sequel to the action-comedy film. More recently, director Shawn Levy confirmed that he is definitely in talks with Disney about the upcoming free guy Payment.
“I’ve had a few over the last few months. So there’s definitely real interest there,” Levy said in a February 2022 interview. “But for Ryan, we knew [the film would do well]. We had such a clear idea of the tone, the story, the details of free guy, and we’ve both done a few sequels in our lives, so we know how hard it is to make a worthy one. And when we’re sure that’s the kind we’ll do, then we’ll do it.”
Directed by Levy with a screenplay by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn, free guy stars Reynolds as a bank teller named Guy who, after acquiring a pair of player-worn sunglasses, discovers that he is an NPC in an open-world video game, which brings Guy to get out of its predetermined routine and out of the script. Following its theatrical release, free guy grossed over $330 million at the worldwide box office.
free guy is available on digital platforms, 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and DVD. It’s also streaming now on Disney+.
