Shout’s October slate! includes Bill & Ted, more Halloween movies and the return of the living dead in 4K, plus RIP Nichelle Nichols


Alright, we have some great 4K Ultra HD catalog news to share with you today, but first we have a new review…

Spent some time this weekend watching Stanley Kubrick’s historic war movie paths of glory (1957) thanks to a beautiful new 4K Ultra HD version from our friends at Kino Lorber Studio Classics. For the first time, the image has been scanned from the original camera negative in native 4K – Criterion’s 2010 Blu-ray release was just a 2K scan of a fine-grained master positive – so it’s unquestionably the best the movie has ever looked at home. It’s a great presentation not to be missed for fans and cinephiles of Kubrick.

Alright, now for the catalog news…VCI Entertainment has put Bob Clark’s Children should not play with dead things (1972) for release in 4K Ultra HD on 10/11 as new 50th Anniversary Edition. The release will include a new video intro and Q&A with actor Alan Ormsby, as well as a new 90-minute documentary about Clark’s horror films titled dream of death. But that’s not all: Scream! and Scream Factory have just unveiled the rest of their October release slate, and it includes no less than FIVE great 4K UHD titles, plus plenty of great standard Blu-ray releases.

From 10/4 you will get the Army of Darkness: Collector’s Edition (4K UHD/Blu-ray – in a variety of different SKUs, including Amaray and Steelbook packaging, and website-exclusive gift packs), The 4K Halloween Collection (1995-2002) (4K UHD – includes three films, details below), and Bad Santa 2 (Blu-Ray). The sequel to 10/11 is Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure (4K UHD), plus Studio Ghibli titles ocean waves and When Marnie Was Here (Blu-ray/DVD – the latter also in Steelbook packaging). On 10/18, look for Return of the Living Dead (4K UHD – a web-exclusive gift pack will also be available) as well as Three wishes for Cinderella, A Silent Voice: The Movie, Farmageddon, The Possessed, king slayerand The deer king (all on Blu-ray/DVD or separate BD and DVD SKUs). Finally, on 10/25, look for the When Calls the Heart: Year Nine – 6 Movie Collection (DVDs) and The last detail (UHD 4K).

Note that the Halloween the box will include both cups of The Curse of Michael Myers in 4K, with H20 and Resurrection. According to the studio’s license agreement, these three films will not be available separately. You can only get them in this box set, so plan accordingly.

Keep in mind that the Coen brothers Fargo Also coming in 4K UHD from Shout! Factory like a scream! Pick the title, per retail sources on 10/25 (though it’s not officially announced yet and could slip in November). We also confirmed with Shout! than John Badham War games (1983) is coming in 4K UHD, likely in December (tentative on-sale date per retail source is 6/12).

Meanwhile, we learned that Imprint’s new Blu-ray release of The beast will include a new feature documentary from our friend Daniel Griffith of Ballyhoo Motion Pictures. It’s called Nanawatai! : Inside the Beast. The title is now available.

First of all, Lucasfilm and Disney have just released the final trailer for their upcoming Star Wars: Andor Disney+ streaming series, which debuts with a 3-episode premiere on 9/21. A lot of fans have slept on this show, but we’ve heard from Lucasfilm insiders that this is the one to watch – it’s going to surprise a lot of people. The show is set to have two 12-episode seasons, and it’s created by Tony Gilroy, who co-wrote A thug as good as Thick headed movies. Here’s a preview of the new trailer…

Finally today, we must take a moment to acknowledge the passing of Nichelle Nicholswho will forever be remembered as Lieutenant Uhura on the classic star trek Television series and its subsequent feature film sequels. Many scientists, astronauts and engineers have been inspired by this woman for Boldly Go – especially women and people of color – but few have been bolder or more fearless in doing so. The fact that NASA honored his legacy this weekend speaks volumes about his passion and influence. Rest in peace Nickel. And thank you.
