Successful films could soon shoot in Carteret

For all of us who grew up in the Carteret area, this is a very cool thing to think about. A film studio. A standard. Built at the water’s edge.

It is proposed to take the former Dupont property and turn it into a mini-Hollywood with film and television production studios, hotel rooms and offices. With a go big or go home attitude, the plan calls for a dozen sound stages of 20,000 square feet each.

Along with that, there would be hotel and social media suites spread over 15 floors, rooftop amenities, and even 25,000 square feet of retail space. The idea is to build more than go out, preserving the surrounding space. It is part of a billion dollar redevelopment project before the Carteret Planning Board.

“It’s absolutely spectacular what’s on offer here,” says Carteret Mayor Dan Reiman. “It’s a great opportunity to continue to grow our industrial and commercial base, to really highlight the $2 billion development that’s happened in Carteret, and it meshes perfectly with the arts center of the scene on Washington Ave. This has the potential to create thousands of local jobs and inject $1 billion into union building in the waterfront area as well as long-term permanent jobs like stagehands and support staff that would be needed .

Film crew and cameraman.

If you are from this region like me, you remember Carteret for its blue-collar atmosphere, its warehouses, its strip clubs and its chemical factories. It is a stone’s throw from the East Jersey State Prison, on the border of Rahway and Avenel. There is a grain in Carteret that something like that would shake. Or maybe kiss?

Films have been shot on location in the area, such as Mickey Roarke’s “The Wrestler” and Sylvester Stallone’s “Lock up”. It would be great for the local economy if this came to fruition and a fun flex for all of us who grew up on these streets. Let’s hope that happens.
