The Crown adds Californication and Designated Survivor star to s5

The crown is preparing for the release of Series 5, filming having started on the final series of episodes last month. This means we’ve received a constant stream of information, including a first glimpse of some of the new cast members taking over as royals.

Now we have reports of The mirror this Californication and Designated survivor Actress Natascha McElhone has been cast for Penny Knatchbull, a close friend of Prince Phillip who was among 30 people who attended the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral earlier this year.

Other cast members joining the series for Series 5 for new roles are Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, Olivia Williams as Camilla Parker Bowles and Jonny Lee Miller as then Prime Minister John Major.

Meanwhile, Imelda Staunton succeeds Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II, while Jonathan Pryce and Lesley Manville replace Tobias Menzies and Helena Bonham Carter as Prince Phillip and Princess Margaret, respectively.

Series 5 will serve as the penultimate series in the Netflix drama, with executive producer Suzanne Mackie explaining that the series comes too close to the present to write it down as a historical drama.

“Peter (Morgan, the creator) made it very clear, that he just can’t write something unless he has had time to get a proper perspective,” she said.

“I think he always thought 10 years was the minimum time for him to see something in a historical context, to allow him to really understand it. I don’t think he will deviate from it.”

The crown seasons 1 through 4 are now streamed on Netflix, while seasons 1 through 3 are also available on DVD and Blu ray.
