The sequel seeks the reason to exist

With an iconic theme song (snap, snap), TV shows, cartoons, movies, comics and more, “The Addams Family” is a well-established property. Unfortunately, the latest release has no established reason to exist.

Animation has given the world great stories like “The Lion King”, https: // -exist /”Wolfwalkers”,”Spirited Away “, well Moreover . But it’s also full of quick money-making, where a mediocre movie makes just enough money for the studio executives to decide to produce an unnecessary sequel in the hopes of repeating that financial success.

In 2019, “The Addams Family” was released with mixed reviews. The animation and vocal cast were good, but the movie was nothing to write home about. Just two years later, “The Addams Family 2” is here, and it feels like a room of writers threw sketches on the wall to see what would be left, then tied it all together under a very coward of the family trip made to death. .

“The Addams Family 2” opens with Wednesday (Chloe Grace Moretz) participating in a grisly science fair experiment transferring intelligence from an octopus capable of solving Rubik’s Cubes to insane Uncle Fester (Nick Kroll) . The experiment is a success, but Wednesday does not win the science fair. Everyone does it, thanks to participation trophies that anger the tortured genie.

It’s not a bad opening, and Moretz once again shines as the only good part of these films. Wednesday is the only entertaining character to watch, and her wit and tone goes straight to the point, just as the character should. She has great lines like “Look, Lurch. Loud people who use fast rides to distract themselves from childhood trauma.”

The chaos and energy of the crazy science fair seems to match the traditional vibe of the 90s animated series. And visually, the characters translate well into a more modern 3D CG look that is prevalent in animated films. today.

Once the science fair is over, however, “The Addams Family 2” kicks off a random storyline on Wednesday that doesn’t suit her family. To “correct” this, Gomez Addams (Oscar Isaac), the patriarch of the family, offers them to go on a road trip. And the film follows from it.

The following is a series of random skits involving the Addams visiting Niagara Falls, entering an unwilling cowgirl beauty pageant on Wednesday, visiting (then blowing up) the Grand Canyon, participating in a song and an act roadhouse disco dance and culminating in a kaiju fight between a Fester mutated by an octopus and a mad scientist made up of different farm animals.

Very little of the film matches the decades of “Addams Family” tone defined by previous television series and movies. Proving the franchise has stood the test of time, Millennials and Gen Z seem to have an affinity for the Addams.

But fans of the franchise generally expect charming and deliciously dark characters to get involved in twisted, ghoulish antics that parody the “ideal” American family of the 20th century.

While the 2019 reboot at least attempted to deliver some of those things, “The Addams Family 2” seems less interested in giving fans of the franchise what they love and more interested in placing these established characters in a modernized world. plagued by exhausted tropes.

Chasing the Addams family on vacation, a lawyer (Wallace Shawn) claims that Wednesday Addams was swapped with another baby in the hospital right after birth and that she is not actually family. This too is nothing more than a tired trope, with Fester pretending to be a shark and chasing everyone out of the water in Miami and a mad scientist is revealed in the end to be nothing more than ‘a cut and paste greedy villain who wants Wednesday’s Science to get rich.

It’s clear that this script (which sort of took four people to write) has just been slapped to repeat the financial success of the 2019 reboot, which grossed over $ 200 million against a budget of $ 24 million. .

Put “The Addams Family 2” in the same box as those dozens of direct-to-DVD Disney suites or the “Hotel Transylvania” franchise that continues to generate more movies.

Perhaps the movie’s biggest sin was finding a great cast that matched these characters and gave the family a fit, updated art style, and then wasted it all on giving those icons nothing to do. beloved.

What’s the point of giving Lurch extended musical numbers or pitting the Addamsas against a mad scientist “Megamind” scam? The movie doesn’t even feel like it’s trying half the time, giving a teenage background this exact line: “OMG, I should take a selfie of this moment.” It’s a wonder the next scene didn’t involve children drinking their Ovaltine.

Young kids today might watch this drivel, but if parents really care about properly introducing their kids to “The Addams Family,” they’ll skip this latest movie and instead place a DVD of the ’90s movies, reruns of the 1964 -66 series, the animated series or an anthology of the first comic book from the 1930s. Even the Scooby-Doo episode where they meet the Addams would be better to watch.

“The Addams Family 2” opens in theaters and online for rental today.
