Ways to Help Fairfax County Neighbors This Holiday Season


FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA – Holidays are a time to spend with loved ones, and also a time to graciously give to others. The County of Fairfax and Volunteer Fairfax both have information on how to donate time, money and items during this season of giving.

New unwrapped gifts can be dropped off at any Fairfax County fire station until Sunday, December 12, and at the McLean Community Center until Saturday, December 11. Click here to learn more.

“Homeless Survival Kits”

Recovery Programs Solutions of Virginia asks for items that those they serve need year-round, such as personal hygiene products, lotions, bottled water, thick socks, and non-perishable foods. These items can be placed in a kit and dropped off at centers in Annandale, Arlington and South County Alexandria; call (800) 374-4198 to arrange a drop-off time. Click here to learn more.

Winter clothing donations

There are several possibilities to donate winter coats, hats, scarves and mittens / gloves to those who need them. For more information visit VA corner stones, Operation Hot (District of Sully), and the county site.

Holiday meals for the homeless

The Northern Virginia Family Service provides meals for guests at their family shelter in Manassas and needs volunteers to prepare and serve at least 50 guests. Click here for more information and more ways to help NVFS.

Reston Elf store

The Elf Store allows young residents to choose a free gift for the adults in their life. Donations can be dropped off until December 10 at the Cathy Hudgins Community Center in Southgate, 12125 Pinecrest Road, Reston. Suggested items for donation include jewelry, candles, tea towels, household items, ties, DVDs and more. Click here for more information.
