The story of Shakugan not Shana revolves around a teenager named Yuji Sakai, who meets a mysterious red-haired girl named Shana. According to her, Yuji has been dead for quite some time, and he is only kept alive by his “Power of Existence” which recharges every midnight. Along with Shana, he is embroiled in an age-old conflict involving a parallel dimension known as the Crimson Realm.

The Crimson Realm is filled with inhabitants and gods who have their own power of existence, with those uninterested in maintaining peace with the human world feeding on the life forces of humans. Fighting alongside “Flame Haze” Shana, Yuji hopes to help end the ongoing slaughter of innocent humans. Along with these fantasy and action-adventure elements, the series also incorporates slice-of-life concepts.

Where to read Shakugan no Shana light novels and manga

Shakugan not Shana was originally a light novel series by Yaschichiro Takahashi and Noizi Ito, which debuted in 2002. Spanning 10 years, the decade’s worth of stories filled 26 light novel volumes. The first manga adaptation ran from 2005 to 2011, culminating in 10 volumes. The second manga series, Shakugan no Shana X Eternal Song: Harukanaru Utalasted five years with as many volumes.

Unfortunately, these print versions of the series are quite hard to find and in some cases completely non-existent on the English market. For the manga, Amazon has the first six volumes, although that’s it, as Viz Media unlocalized the last four volumes. Likewise, only two of the light novels have been published in the West, and only the first can be found on Amazon. This was probably because back then, light novel localizations weren’t as profitable as they are now. For these and other reasons explained later, anime is usually the best way to get into the series.
